Google How Google Plans To Turn Apps Into Its Next Big Business GOOG

Google Apps - can Google turn this into a significant chunk of business versus Search Advertising Revenue? Their investment in Google Apps and the drive to add connected apps and functionality most recently with DocVerse conversion into Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office integration is gaining momentum. Its a serious consideration in this chastened times to cut the hassle and distraction of IT Infrastructure for business individuals and professionals. Mobility is now so key to utility on the smartphone iphone, blackberry android and all that Google Apps has the opportunity to be come the definitive portable suite. Microsoft have already either missed or decided not to seriously compete in this space despite their announcements and releases. Cloud Connect could be a major factor in pushing forward their grip on this niche. It is not without risks but as a small team business or individual could you afford a company of their magnitude to look after your servers? If you go with Google Apps and even the free personal account is well worth having, (try before you buy) then you have one hell of an infrastructure team behind you.

It is a small chunk of revenue at the moment just 3% as an income stream but have no doubt with the battle with Facebook Apps functionality and value add will need to be a continuing value add service for Google.

Even from Search perspective it makes sense once they have a user signed-up the chances of them using anything but Google for search are pretty slim, their apps solutions remain compelling.

The 3rd party apps applications are growing all the time and as with the iphone that 3rd party supply market and community drives demand not only for Search but also for tight integration on their android OS (operating system) on phones and tablets, Ipad is for early adopters and brand loyalists but there will be a market for others and Android is open as an OEM/developer environment so more brownie points for Google.

Value for money fabulous, they are releasing new functionality all the time. There will become a tipping point at which I for one will stop using MS Office, its not there yet but its coming.

For some more insight into the perspective for Google Apps see this article attached from BusinessInsider.com

Personal Branding How to Reinvent Your Personal Brand - Dorie Clark - The Conversation - Harvard Business Review

What are you known for? What do people say about you when you leave the room? (They are talking about you, aren't they?) How can you burnish your reputation to win that promotion or land that new client? You've diligently focused on your personal brand for years — but what if you now want to reinvent yourself?

It happens all the time. A financial services executive moves into retail. A techie wants to try marketing. A VC wants to jump ship and become a life coach. Your path may make perfect sense to you, but how can you convince others to embrace your new brand — and take you seriously? Here are five steps to reinventing yourself for the business marketplace.

  1. What's Your Destination? First, you need to develop a detailed understanding of where you want to go, and the knowledge and skills necessary to get there. If you've been a techie for the past decade, you may understand every new marketing toy out there, from Facebook to Foursquare. But can you effectively convey that knowledge to a non-technical audience? Learning the skills you need will help you gain the confidence necessary to start identifying (and publicizing) yourself in your new identity.
  2. Leverage Your Points of Difference. In marketing, we call it a USP — a "Unique Selling Proposition." What makes you different from anyone else? That's what people will remember, and you can use it to your advantage. Conservative pundit Ann Coulter, as the New York Times recently reported, has reinvented herself after losing popularity to newer, even more right-wing talking heads. Leveraging her unique blend of blonde vixen and conservative firebrand, Coulter is now courting gay Republicans who enjoy diva-style smack talk. You probably won't find Sarah Palin hitting that circuit anytime soon, so it looks like Coulter owns it.
  3. Develop a Narrative. You used to write award-winning business columns — and now you want to review restaurants? It's human nature to have many interests, to seek new experiences, and to want to develop new skills over the course of your life. Unfortunately, there's a popular word to describe that profound quest: dilettante. It's unfair, but to protect your brand you need to develop a coherent narrative arc that explains to people — in a nice, simple way so they can't miss it — exactly how your past fits into the present. "I used to write about the business side of many industries, including food and wine," you could say. "I realized my big-picture knowledge about agricultural trends and business finance made me uniquely positioned to cover restaurants with a different perspective." It's like a job interview — you're turning what could be perceived as a weakness (he doesn't know anything about food, because he's been a business reporter for 20 years) into a compelling strength that people can remember (he's got a different take on the food industry because he has knowledge most other people don't).
  4. Reintroduce Yourself. The vast majority of people, regrettably, aren't paying much attention to you. That means their perceptions are probably a few years out of date — and it's not their fault. With hundreds (or thousands) of Facebook friends and vague social connections, we can't expect everyone to remember all the details of our lives. So we have to strategically re-educate our friends and acquaintances — because, especially if we're launching a new business venture, they're going to be our buyers and recommenders. That means a concerted effort to phone or email everyone on your list — individually — to let them know about your new direction and, where appropriate, ask for their help, advice, or business. (Blast emails are a start, but too often go unread.)
  5. Prove Your Worth. There's a difference between my knowing that you've launched a new graphic design business and trusting that you'll do a good job for clients. I may like you a lot, but unless I see proof of your skills, I may hesitate to put my own reputation on the line by sending you referrals. That's where blogs, podcasts, videocasts, and other forms of social media come in. It's critical to let potential customers see what you're about and test drive your approach before they make a large commitment. Checking out your image gallery and seeing a roster of attractive corporate logos you've designed may allay my fears enough to send you that major new account.
What are your best strategies for reinventing your personal brand?

Skype - Voice Video Messaging The Big Blog - Celebrating 25 million concurrent users

I’m Vice President and General Manager for Consumer. My team is charged with designing and developing Skype’s incredible products for Windows and Mac, as well as creating our great value paid services.
  Neil Stevens

Celebrating 25 million concurrent users

25 million concurrent Skype usersYesterday we reached a new milestone for peak concurrent users: 25 million people online, on Skype, at the same time. Our software is designed to handle large numbers of concurrent users, with wideband audio and group video calls all flowing smoothly around the world – from mothers in Montevideo to their sons in San Francisco, and from contractors in Canberra to their suppliers in Seoul.

In 2009, our users spoke, stared and sung for 113 billion Skype-to-Skype minutes – and for the first six months of this year, approximately 40% of Skype-to-Skype minutes were video minutes. All of this made possible by software built by a team of just under 800 people*. How do we do this?

Very simply: we do one thing. Our single minded focus is on building the best communications products, and building them for the whole world. This is not a hobby – it’s who and what we are. And at Skype, we have one ambition: to build communications products which billions of people embrace every day.

Skype software takes care of the complexities of network topography, firewalls, different OSes, multiple devices – computers, and a myriad of connection types, leaving you to do the talking, laughing, smiling, crying, singing, dancing and more. Because we think 25 million is worth celebrating.

A bridge to the cloud: Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office now available to early testers - Official Google Docs Blog

Cross posted on the Google Enterprise Blog

Tens of millions of people have moved to Google Docs because it’s 100% web: it provides real-time collaboration in the browser, with no software to install, manage or upgrade. Of course, we know that many more of you still use Microsoft Office, because until recently, there weren’t many tools to help you collaborate and share with others. Now there’s more choice.

To help smooth the transition from Office to the cloud, my teammates and I founded a company called DocVerse, which was acquired by Google earlier this year. Over the last 9 months, we’ve been hard at work moving the DocVerse product to Google’s infrastructure. We’ve also renamed it Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office. Today, we’re pleased to take the next step towards a public launch and make it available to early testers.

For those of you who have not made the full move to Google Docs and are still using Microsoft Office, Google has something great to offer. With Cloud Connect, people can continue to use the familiar Office interface, while reaping many of the benefits of web-based collaboration that Google Docs users already enjoy.

Users of Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 can sync their Office documents to the Google cloud, without ever leaving Office. Once synced, documents are backed-up, given a unique URL, and can be accessed from anywhere (including mobile devices) at any time through Google Docs. And because the files are stored in the cloud, people always have access to the current version.

Once in the Google cloud, documents can be easily shared and even simultaneously edited by multiple people, from right within Office. A full revision history is kept as the files are edited, and users can revert to earlier versions in one click. These are all features that Google Docs users already enjoy today, and now we’re bringing them to Microsoft Office.

All you need is a Google account, and you’re ready to go. That’s it!

If you’re a Google Apps for Business customer interested in joining our preview program, please sign up here. If you’re not, don’t worry- at launch, Google Cloud Connect will be available free to everyone, including consumers.

Posted by Shan Sinha, Group Product Manager

Another increment in the Google Microsoft Wars, the company and team DocVerse previously acquired by Microsoft are looking for early adopters, business users of Google Apps to preview Google Cloud Connect, a form of bridge so that you can edit in GDocs, accessible anytime anywhere documents using MS office Interface but commit updates live to the cloud storage of the documents. We have yet to test it but you can be assured we will be very shortly. You can knock Google but they find ways to help users migrate better than anyone else I have experienced and at amazingly/unbeatable low cost. They can keep the Ad Income growing for me, it funds the R&D and delivery of great value for business and personal users. Got to be good. Is anyone at Microsoft listening anymore? It doesn't feel like it?

Video Looking at 20th Century Art through the Eyes of a Physicist | MIT World

Physicist and art collector Walter Lewin shares his personal insights into major works of art from the first quarter of the 20th century.

Known in the hallways of building 37 for his famous art contests, Lewin succumbs to pressure from students and colleagues to give this lecture as part of an IAP event in advance of trips to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Fogg Art Museum. This talk is centered on pioneering artists whose work changed the world.

Why Listen to a Physicist talking about art: CP Snow and Leonardo Da Vinci would probably know why. This fusion and how a human being can enjoy the extremes of abstraction be they art physics music maths or technology. There is a point t which the beauty of each seems to perfectly explain each other.

Renaissance Man and Digital Man, it sounds a bit of a hack expression now but John Sculley at the time CEO of Apple described in his book as "the computer as wings for the mind" this still resonates quite a few years later.

Crossing the boundaries is what fascinates me about these enlightened individuals for me they are the emerging heros of human culture and civilisation. In history hounded as heretics what will we make of this going forward.
Walter Lewin concentrates on the first quarter of the 20th Centry, focus on 2 dozen artists the pioneers the most fascinating and the most important. Got to be worth a listen I thought...

Stop Press: LDF Core Strategy and Reinstatement of Regional Spatial Strategies

With the election of the Coalition Government in May this year, a commitment was made to remove the layer of top down planning guidance known as Regional Spatial Strategies which set out specific housing targets to be met during the period 2006 - 2026.

On 6 July Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government wrote to all Planning Authorities announcing the revocation of Regional Strategies with immediate effect, leaving adopted local plans as the basis for local decision making. This action was subsequently challenged by Cala Homes through the High Court via a Judicial Review which was heard on 22nd October, claiming primarily that the Secretary of State had acted beyond his powers.

On 10 November the judgement was announced which concluded that the Secretary of State had acted unlawfully.

The effect of this decision is to re-establish Regional Strategies as part of the development plan immediately. The policies and targets within the South East Plan will need to be taken into account in planning decisions from now on, up until a time when legislation formally removes Regional Strategies.

The Secretary of State wrote to Local Planning Authorities and to the Planning Inspectorate on 27 May 2010 informing them of the Government's intention to abolish Regional Strategies in the Localism Bill and that he expected them to have regard to this as a material consideration in planning decisions. Advice from the Government's Chief Planning Officer on 10 November reaffirmed that local authorities should still have regard to the Secretary of State's May 2010 letter. The Localism Bill is expected to be published late November 2010 which will outline these proposals, but as with all legislative procedures it will take some time to become law.

Winchester City Council's response to the May 2010 announcement is to continue with the preparation of its LDF but to reconsult on local housing needs pending the Localism Bill and the removal of Regional Strategies. The Council has developed 'Blueprint' to get local communities debating local development requirements in the future. Blueprint remains critical to the Council in developing an understanding of the local needs and aspirations of the many communities which make up the Winchester District, which in the fullness of time will be translated into spatial planning policy through the LDF.
